IMPORTANT GEOLOGICAL SITES IN THE TERRITORY

A Territory Forged by Geology and Culture

The territory was selected for its invaluable geological wealth, reflected in unique natural formations such as the imposing Piedra del Peñol, the enigmatic Nus caves, the majestic Alicante River Canyon, and the historic La Quiebra Tunnel. It also harbors significant ancestral and geological remains, such as pre-Hispanic petroglyphs, old mines, and mythical hills like Tetona, as well as waterfalls of unparalleled beauty.

Its cultural value is deeply intertwined with geology, manifesting itself in the history of the Tahamí people, who left their mark on the rocks of the Antioquia Batholith through petroglyphs. This legacy is also preserved in ancient burial sites and gold caches, legendary muleteer trails, forgotten mines, and the gullies carved by generations of mules. Literature has immortalized these stories, highlighting figures such as the Marchioness of Yolombó, by the renowned author Tomás Carrasquilla, the daring adventures of María del Pardo, and the bravery of Ana de Castrillón—women who defined an era in the region's mining history.

Sites of geological interest in Colombia are called geotopes. Within a geopark, they are called geosites because a geopark is of international significance. In Colombia, there are 249 points selected by the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) as geological points of national importance; the following stand out:

Geosites are areas or places within a geopark that have special geological interest due to their unique characteristics, whether due to their formation, deformation, fossil content, mineralogy or geomorphology.

These sites stand out not only for their scientific value, but also for their educational and cultural importance.

DEFINITION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF NATIONAL GEOTOPES OR GEOSITES IN A GEOPARK.

Scientific Interest : Geotopes are places where unique or exceptional geological phenomena can be observed, providing valuable information about the history of the Earth, its processes and its evolution.

Educational Value: They serve as educational resources, providing students and the general public with the opportunity to learn about geology and natural processes in a direct and tangible way.

Cultural Importance: Many geosites have significant cultural and heritage value, being part of the history and identity of a region.

Aesthetic Appeal: These places usually have great visual and scenic appeal, which also makes them tourist attractions.
