SITE 8. "MASTODONS" IN THE LA MARMOLERA MINE, YALI.

LOCATION . On the San Bartolomé River, near the hamlet of Doña Ana

COORDINATES: S.6,704658 -74,794739.

Recent alluvial deposits. Quaternary 3 Gomphoheriidae, Stegomastodon sp. Mastodon.

Right where the populous Belén sector stands today, west of Medellín, mastodons roamed, those gigantic extinct relatives of elephants.

But they weren't the only ones, as they also found remains of giant animals in the municipalities of Yalí and San Vicente, in Antioquia.

Mastodons are also described in the San Bartolomé River in Yalí, at the La Marmolera mine (Fig. 1, locality 15), where molars possibly belonging to the family Gomphoheriidae and the genus Stegomastodon were found. The molar shows good preservation conditions, with moderate wear [15]. The specimen is assigned to the Early Pleistocene.

During the Neogene period, the mastodon record east of the Department of Antioquia allowed for paleogeographic inferences and the identification of possible migratory routes [15]. Specifically, the records of mastodons representing the Gomphotheriidae family are related to populations from the American continent, which could indicate that their migration was facilitated by the uplift of the Isthmus of Panama.

GEOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION.

In Colombia, we have several archaeological sites where the interaction of early inhabitants with megafauna has been demonstrated. https://titanoboaforest.com/colombia-tierra-de-mastodontes-anexo/

“Mastodons” migrating through the tropical dry forests of the Cauca River valley or across the Caribbean coast, dispersing eastward, a route that will take them to territories of present-day Venezuela, while other herds cross rivers such as the Suárez or the Caquetá where many will find death as they are swept away by their powerful waters; some find their home in the Bogotá savanna, even inhabiting the high areas of the Eastern Cordillera.

Some groups venture into the Amazon rainforest and others head south through the Andes and the Pacific coast to eventually colonize the entire continent; others, however, will fall prey to the first inhabitants of our territory who will feed on their flesh.

This brief description is possible thanks to the numerous fossil proboscidean remains found in our country, whose presence has been documented for several centuries. In recent times, paleontologists unanimously agree that two proboscidean species inhabited South America during the Quaternary period: Cuvieronius hyodon and Notiomastodon platensis, both recorded in our country.
